Here is a look at everything you need to know about how and why pre-emergent herbicides can help improve the life of your yard.

How Pre-Emergent Herbicides Work

Pre-emergent herbicides are a specific type of weed control solution. Instead of simply killing the weed, this type of herbicide will stop the seedling from germinating, preventing the weed from growing in the first place. Some of the various types of weeds that pre-emergent herbicides can be used for include:

  • Clovers
  • Crabgrass
  • Dandelions
  • Witchgrass
  • Thistle
  • Goosegrass
  • Chickweed

Some types of weeds that can be found in this part of Utah can be extremely invasive. If they are allowed to grow freely, they can cause a lot of damage to the grass, plants, and flowers in your yard. By using a pre-emergent herbicide, you can stop the problem before it ever gets started.

When To Apply Pre-Emergent Herbicides

When applying pre-emergent herbicides, it is vital that you get the timing just right. If you apply the herbicides too soon, they may dissipate early, which would allow the weeds to germinate. If you apply them after the weeds have already germinated, they will be completely ineffective, and the weeds will continue to grow as if nothing was applied to them at all. Remember, this is a weed prevention solution, not a weed killer.

Pre-emergent herbicides can be applied two times a year to tackle both spring and winter weed growth. For summer weeds, the herbicides should be applied after the temperatures have risen to 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Wait until the temperature has stayed at 55 degrees, or slightly above, for at least 48 hours before you apply the pre-emergent herbicides. For winter weed prevention, you should not apply the pre-emergent herbicides until the soil temperatures have dropped to at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and only apply them when the temperatures are expected to continue to drop over the next few days.

How To Apply Pre-Emergent Herbicides

Pre-emergent herbicides are offered in granular and liquid forms. For granular, you will need either a handheld spread or a manual push spreader. This special piece of lawn equipment allows you to dump the herbicide in a large opened-mouth container that evenly disperses the granules out the other end. If you don't have a spreader, it can be almost impossible to spread the granules evenly throughout your yard.

The same rules apply for liquid herbicides. In order to ensure that the liquid is completely covering your yard, you will need a lawn sprayer that is able to handle large amounts of liquids.
