The Importance Of Proper Lawn Fertilization

Keeping your lawn well-fertilized may seem like a trivial task. However, it is actually quite important. Fertilizer is like food for your yard. Like all living things, if it does not get proper food, water, and nutrients, it will not survive.

Some of the benefits of fertilizing your lawn include the following:

  • Healthier soil and plants
  • Enhances the appearance of your lawn
  • Improved weed control in your yard
  • Increases your home's value
  • Stronger and more durable roots on the grass and plants in your lawn

Some lawn fertilizers can also act as a natural pesticide for certain bugs, meaning your lawn will have fewer grubs and other harmful insects crawling around and ruining your grass.

How Often Should I Fertilize My Yard?

Many people think that fertilizing your yard is a menial job. However, there is a lot of thought that goes into this process.

The first time that you fertilize your yard each year should be during the later part of winter or early spring. Once temperatures stay consistently above freezing, you should apply the first feeding to your yard. Ideally, when applying the first feeding, you will want the ground to be around 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Depending on the type of grass that you have, you should fertilize your lawn about five to six times each year. However, if you have warm-season grass, like buffalo or Bermuda grass, you can go longer between feedings. Usually, with warm-season grass, you can fertilize it every six to eight weeks. If the grass starts to turn brown or light green, you'll need to fertilize it more often, though.

What Will Happen If I Don't Fertilize My Yard?

The only way to ensure that your yard is able to stay strong and healthy all year long is to fertilize it regularly. Fertilizers put potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus into the ground, which helps to give your grass the nutrients it needs to stay healthy. If you don't fertilize your yard, you may start to notice the following:

  • Your grass will not feel as soft as it could.
  • You will have weeds growing throughout your yard.
  • You may have more bugs and insects around your lawn.
  • There could be large brown patches throughout your yard.

No matter what type of grass you have, if you use fertilizer, your yard will be more lush and green. Having a healthy-looking yard could improve your home's curb appeal.
